Amazon has grown in recent years. With this growth comes increased opportunities to start a small side hustle and scale quickly. Since it's online, you can upload your product details, monitor sales, and receive payments anywhere and anytime - even during your work break. You need to create an Amazon seller account first. The process is straightforward, and we'll work through the steps together.
Creating a seller account is a breeze, but there are a few requirements. Before you sign up, here are things you'll need:
Business email address or an Amazon customer account
Chargeable
Valid government-issued ID for the verification process
Your phone number
A to receive money from your sales
Let's get into it!
Follow these steps to create your seller account on Amazon:
Step 1: Go to
Step 2: Navigate to "Pricing" and click "Compare selling plans" from the dropdown menu. There are two selling plans (individual and professional) that you can choose from, depending on your business and expectations.
If it's a small side hustle and you don't expect to sell more than 40 products/month, select the individual plan. It doesn't come with a monthly cost, but instead costs an additional 99 cents/order, allowing you to start small, especially if you're just testing the waters. However, you won't be able to advertise your products on Amazon or sell certain products like drugs, alcohol, baby products, fine art, explosives, etc. If you select the individual plan, you can always upgrade to the professional plan ($39.99/month) anytime. Step 3: Once you’ve chosen your preferred seller plan, enter your email address and password in the next window. Click the ‘Next’ button. Head over to your email box and approve the notification sent to you from Amazon. This will automatically take you to a screen where you enter your business and personal information.
Step 4: Enter your business location, type, and full name. Unless you have a business formed already, select “None, I am an Individual” under the business type. Click ‘Agree and continue.’
Step 5: Enter your personal information like government-issued identification and phone number. Confirm your address is correct because Amazon will send a postcard with a verification number that you must enter before your account becomes active. Once everything checks out, click ‘Next’ to continue.
Click ‘I Understand’ to proceed to the bank verification page. After verifying your bank account, enter your credit card details. Your credit card will also need to be validated.
Step 7: Next, provide:
Your store’s name
If you have diversity certifications.
If you're the manufacturer or brand owner. If you choose 'Yes' or 'Some of them,' you'll be asked if you own a government-registered trademark for branded products you want to sell on Amazon.
Step 8: Upload images of your ID and bank statement to verify your identity. Click ‘submit.’ Confirm if your address is correct to receive a postcard with a verification code.
Step 9: The postcard should arrive within 5-7 business days. Once you’ve received it, enter the code into Seller Central.
Step 6: Provide your billing information, such as a valid credit card and bank account number. As you're just starting, separating business and personal finances is a good idea. It makes bookkeeping easier so you can find out if you need to change anything quickly. Read to get a clearer idea of why this is important.
